God Bless America

One of the reasons I blog is to connect with my great-great-great grandchildren....so that they can someday have a sense of me and our family. That they may learn from our mistakes, and find faith in rocky times and bond as we laugh together. I seldom write about politics because I really don't enjoy the political banter and even the fervor that some people exhibit when they think they "know" a candidate or only focus on one piece of the puzzle....or make vast generalizations ("Oh, they were totally bought out by big business" or .....) or the mistrust that is immediately tagged onto each politician. It is one of the reasons why I drive my husband crazy when I say that I don't love the "jury" system of law. I honestly don't think most juries are qualified to understand a lot of technical issues of particular cases and are totally swayed by emotions or personal opinion. We believe what the media wants us to oftentimes or with blinders and see only what we want to see. I don't feel qualified to understand the economic mess that our country is in....or have the answers to the health care issues we also face. I don't believe that "pulling all our armies home" is always the best idea....but that doesn't mean I have answers for world peace.

Politics are a good microcosm of life. Lots of good and evil, truth and error, downright lies and manipulations, heroic deeds. There are good people everywhere and bad. Regardless of the winners of yesterday's elections, we all still need to stand up against those things that are contrary to our value systems. We all need to be accountable for what we do with our individual lives to make the world a better place. It will be interesting to see what this new administration will do to and for our country. I hope that Obama is the man that most believe him to be. I have concerns. A political writer in England said this:

“You have to pinch yourself – a (.....) radical who all his life has been mentored by, sat at the feet of, worshiped with, befriended, endorsed the philosophy of, funded and been in turn funded, politically promoted and supported by a nexus comprising black power anti-white racists, Jew-haters, revolutionary Marxists, unrepentant former terrorists and Chicago mobsters, is on the verge of becoming President of the United States. And apparently it’s considered impolite to say so.”
- Melanie Philips, The Spectator (UK) 10/14/08

I'm absolutely thrilled that a Afro-American will be President. However, I have MAJOR concerns. My great-great-greats will be able to see this presidency from a different perspective. I hope and pray that Obama will be a great leader. I think John McCain's concession speech last night was the first time I saw what a great man he is. I think it was his finest hour. He said that now is the time for all Americans to unite and try and pull this country together. That our prayers and goodwill need to be with Obama and all the newly elected leaders. Amen!

As a little tribute to American, you might take the time to watch this short Youtube...of Robin Williams portraying the American flag.
