Hungry Hungry Hippo

We did this as a joint young men/young women's activity last month.  It was a riot!!!!  We used balloons instead of  balls and they worked great.  Our fearless leader, Sheryl (below) had to try it out for herself.  She purchased laundry baskets from All a Dollar....but the baskets weren't sturdy enough to make it through the whole game.  Rather than buying expensive baskets, I'd make sure I had  2-3 baskets for each team (8/12- still cheaper than 2 good baskets.)  We used longboards or skateboards.  4 teams.  Attach a rope to the board.  The Hippo needs to wear a helmet.  Their team pushes the hippo on the board out and they try to capture as many balloons or balls in their basket before being pulled back.  (see instructions below)  The team with the most balloon/balls at the end or a certain time limit wins.

Here are the rules:

1. A player is pushed by their team to the center of the room and attempts to grab (or place under a basket) as many balloons or balls as possible and return them to his or her team’s corner.
2. The scooter can NEVER STOP. As soon as the player reaches the center, he or she must be immediately pulled back.
3. You can either send the same player back to the center, or have the whole team rotate through being “hippos.”
4. Only balls that are completely in the team’s corner count as points. Balls will quickly become scattered around the room, and it is not enough to have balls “close” to a corner. If a ball is close, the team can send the hippo towards that ball instead of to the center.
5. The game ends when all of the balls are gone, or when the timer runs out.
NOTE: Please have hippos WEAR HELMETS. When players meet in the middle, the last thing you want to have happen is for their heads to smash in to one another.

Lake Powell Heaven

Lake Powell truly is our family's Disneyland.  We had almost our whole family there- missing Rylee whose competition soccer team was playing in Texas at a tournament, Brooke (8 months pregnant) and Ryker (too young), Annee (at girl's camp), Bri (work) and Susie (started her permanent position at the U of U hospital as an ER nurse.)  We missed them all.

But- The REST of us had a ball!!!!

The weather wasn't the best (had one monsoon rain  where everyone sleeping on top of the houseboat was drenched and  ended up sleeping on top of each other inside afterwards.  David and I were sleeping in the king-sized bed with TWO grand kids (a 6 yr. old and a 9 year old) but we didn't get any sympathy from anyone at all.  That night was a memory!

Because we had some weather and wind, the water by the houseboat was churned and not so appetizing.....

but in spite of it all......the rest of the water was great....and we had a fabulous time!  It just gets better and better.  The 14 kids (plus one friend)  there were soooo good and the cousins love being together.  Games were constantly going on- Hand and Foot, Golf, Blokus, Sequence (our favorite game now) and No Speed Limit.  The boys loved building the fire of all fires.  S'mores were had by all.  We eat until we about burst.  Conner got the award for the worst sunburn.  We love exploring our favorite canyons, the water reflection dancing on the cliffs, the duel reflections in the water below.  Two jet skies kept everyone going that wasn't riding in the ski boat.  Several kiddos learn to ski for the first time.  All the kids either skied, wake boarded, knee boarded, paddled boarded or went on wild tube rides.  Fishing was successful as was lizard hunting.  Fabulous food included a baked potato bar, Olive garden salad, Cafe Rio night, hamburgers, grilled steak and chicken and pina coladas slushies and carnitas.  We love our houseboat.  We LOVE our family time.  Lake Powell- we love thee!!!!!!

(David- still able to kill it!  XOXO)
