Who Made Me a Grandma

Yesterday was Parker's 11th birthday! He delights in telling me he made me a grandma....and I delight in being one. Parker's birth brought a whole new meaning to things we took for granted. He has had a million challenges (read about some of them here http://constantgrowingamazement.blogspot.com/2007/12/happy-birthday-parker.html) has been an example of courage and strength to us. I love, love, love this boy.

This is the cover page of the book I made for him and one page inside. I think he is going to love it. It is filled with pictures of things he loves, friends, family, quotes. We celebrate his life!

End of the Year Meme

Thursday, December 31, 2009
This is a meme I do every year.....the questions are a good review.

What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Had medical tests you really don't want to hear about. Eee-gads! Worried about swine flu. I didn’t get it but one kid and 4 kiddos got it. Soooo thankful my son-in-law didn’t get it since his meds kill his immune system.

Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don’t think I kept a single one. Well, maybe one. I could tell you if I could remember what they were. And definitely I will make more. It is tradition.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes! Little Sadie Jo was born last March!!!! Love her. Adore her. Want to eat her up!

Did anyone close to you die?
No, but people that are close to me lost people close to them...and that always makes me sad.

What countries did you visit?
Can you call Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah countries? No stamp in the passport this year....

What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Happy feet. Resolution and peace about a few things.

What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
January 7, 2009....Tanner and Brooke's (and Annee’s) wedding. This time last year I was running a hundred miles an hour.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
3 months of wonderful/crazy/busy summer! Planning and orchestrating youth conference with David for our Ward, Lake Powell, two weddings (Nikki Gwilliams...where a runaway steer stole the show....then Kyl Petty’s....where the septic tank was the grand finale) at our home....then being in charge of the food for Stake Girl’s Camp (up to 240 people) and Lake Powell.

What was your biggest failure?
Attitude and fear.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
just 2009 illnesses and injuries.

What was the best thing you bought?
I know this is ridiculous but the pink and brown polka fabric that Lauri sewed into table toppers for the wedding. They have been used by more than a dozen people throughout the year for a dozen occasions. I more than got my monies worth out of them and I love to share.

Whose behavior merited celebration?
Lots of people’s behavior but I would have to say my son Ryan. He is loving and caring and watches out for his sister and brothers. He goes to great lengths to help them as well as so many other people. He’s generous with all that he has been given.

Also, friends. There is no way I could have pulled off the wedding dinner, the weddings last summer, and Stake girl’s camp without wonderful friends stepping in to volunteer and help. That REALLY mattered to me.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Politicians. Most movie stars. Tiger Woods. And mine sometimes...

Where did most of your money go?
Always to this property...digging a new septic drain field cremated our back lawn. It is a bad memory. Let’s not talk about it anymore....

What did you get really, really, really excited about? Planning the wedding dinner. Pink and brown polka dots forever in my memory...

What song will always remind you of 2009? Jason Mraz- I’m Yours. Casey sang this at the wedding dinner.

Compared to this time last year, are you: much happier, richer, nicer?
Next year is going to be better. I promise.

What do you wish you'd done more of?
Exercised. Each time I got into an exercise program this year, I hurt myself. What is up with that?

What do you wish you'd done less of?
Whining and complaining. I’m not going to do that next year either.

How did you spend Christmas? Christmas Eve was snickie snack dinner with all of our children/kiddos. It was wild and crazy and wonderful. Christmas morning was quiet but throughout the day, all the kiddos came again. We grazed like cattle on yummy food, had wonderful times together. I love Christmas. The kiddos all got The Cousins Book of ABC’s and the cutest jammies. Our kids gave David and I jammies as well! So fun! The best part was our kids doing the Twelve Days of Singing Santa for my MIL. It made our Christmas. I love my kids....

Did you fall in love in 2009? Well, I didn’t fall out of love in 2009. I’m keeping the man I fell in love with many years ago. But I do have to say, the other night he told me that I was the best part of his day. Now isn’t that true love? But I started laughing hysterically since my competition was terrible traffic going to and from work, a horrible work assignment that he dreads every year and something else bad that I can’t remember at the moment! When I brought that up, we laughed together. I love that we can laugh together. I’m glad that I am the best part of his day....even if it is his crummy day!

What was your favorite TV program? Don’t tell anyone but I love The Office. Mostly reruns. Sometimes it offends me terribly and I turn it off but the rest is hysterical. I’ve told Cousin Casey I just want to watch a whole season with him since he "gets" it. I try and make David watch it with me but he tries too hard not to laugh. The "wedding" episode was over the top...with my favorite being Kevin wearing Kleenex box shoes. And the dance down the aisle. And Jim cutting off his tie to make Pam laugh....

Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? I think I’m going to take this question off the meme since it drives me crazy that anyone would hate anyone.

What was the best book you read this year?
Without a doubt, Jesus the Christ by James E.Talmadge. It was not only the best book, but studying it with a group of amazing women was a defining experience of my life this year.

What was your greatest musical discovery?
Kris Allen. He won American Idol this year and I love his music/his voice.

What was your favorite film of this year?
Blind Side. Julie and Julia.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned another year older this year....and it was much too long ago to remember. I’m sure I celebrated it for a whole month because I am so lucky that way. I have wonderful family and friends who always make me feel like I matter to them and I get to be queen for the month.

How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Jeans. Dansk clogs. Tops with layered tees underneath. Non-sophisticated. Giving up cute shoes for "sturdy" shoes. Shoes that don’t kill my feet. My store of choice for clothes is Coldwater Creek.

What kept you sane? Knowing that the summer would end. Not that I didn’t love the summer but it was back-to-back events/marathon.

Plus baths. I sometimes had to take two a day for sanity. Okay, once I took three but that was just because I couldn’t get warm.

Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I am so not a fancy celebrity/public figure fan.

What political issue stirred you the most? The zazillion dollar bailout/stimulus package and socialization of medicine. Don’t get me going....

Who did you miss? Still missing my father-in-law. Miss him terribly.

Who was the best new person (people) you met?
Okay, the best new people I met weren’t new people at all. Probably one of the most wonderful experiences of my year happened this summer when I had a reunion with some of my high school friends who I haven’t seen for a hundred years. I was excited but nervous to see them. What in the heck would we find to talk about? Well, we didn’t stop talking or laughing for 4 days.....and I loved every minute of it. Yesterday I put away the seashell Santa that Fay (from California) painted for each of us. Lavender spray sits next to my bed from lavender fields by Pam’s home in Oregon. Every time I see the book Lord of the Flies (in my bedroom) (Dawn’s gift) I alternately laugh/then cringe.(Did I mention we were troubled youth?) I don’t have to even have a reminder of Debbie’s gift....because of her, my whole life has been different. I love, love, love these women.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009. That letting go (children, dreams, expectations, youth) is a natural part of life. It doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hurt but you still have to breathe. In and out. In and out. There are lessons to be learned you really can’t learn any other way...

16 Ways Con Artists Target Travelers

This article was recently in the news. Since I'm dreaming of a stamp in my passport, I thought it was worthy of reading. You might give it a try as well...

http://www.bing.com/travel/content/search?q=16+Ways+Con+Artists+Target+Travelers&cid=msn1115344&gt1=41000

THEN I GOT TO THIS TIP!

The Tumbling Woman

Where: London but could happen anywhere. (Ya, like New York, perhaps?)

The Scam: “If there’s a commotion, assume it’s a fake to distract the victim of a pickpocketing or purse snatching,” says travel guru Rick Steves of Ricksteves.com.

“For example, someone, usually an elderly looking woman, ‘falls’ down an escalator in the London Underground.”

Advice: “Step back,” says Steves, “and watch your valuables.”

So, THAT'S WHAT WAS HAPPENING LAST YEAR!!!! I was part of a pickpocketing scam!

This is what happened when we were ending our trip to New England with Kirk and Cathy to see the fall leaves. It truly was a sight to behold....

"The trip was STILL over-the-top wonderful. Even though Kirk left one of Cathy's suitcases on the airtrain in New York...and we spent a couple of hours trying to find it (ha!)...and it was filled with important stuff and treasures....but it made the trip even funnier. But darn it! The best part of the trip, Kirk and Cathy missed! It was the darn airtrain again. David and I turned in the rental car....then were hauling our luggage on the escalators....up to catch the train. I was in the lead. My large bag had my carry-on hooked on the handle and I was trying to maneuver them on the escalator. I THOUGHT I had it....we were almost halfway up when my bags, that weren't really on the stair all of the way....pulled me back, down and over.....kerplucking down the escalator....over my bags, crashing into David.....REALLY hysterical! Think boom, boom, boom, boom. Some guy at the top stopped the thing (now the alarms are sounding) and came running down thinking I was dead and trying to help me up. David was feeling terrible he couldn't have foreseen the disaster! (but honestly, he was worthless! It must have been the shock but he didn't even help! He just stood there watching!!!!) I was glad I hadn't been wearing a skirt....and TOTALLY bummed our friends weren't there to witness the wreck! I REALLY hope the people viewing the surveillance cameras had a great laugh...I really might show up on Leno or Youtube soon! Today I have stair step bruises up my arm and leg. Afterwards, David just had to look at me and we would both start laughing. Really, what doesn't kill you, makes you laugh."

The only valuable I lost was my pride!!!

The Singing Santas!

Christmas Eve there was a knock on the door and a request for Grandma. Santa had her sit on his lap.....while all of the grandkids/great-grandkids presented her with her last ornament. We didn't know it was them! They also caroled and then shared stories of almost being killed while delivering her ornaments each night (they took turns)....getting caught running through the neighbor's yard, crawling up to the front steps on their belly. Lots of laughs. I'm telling you, this wonderful service made our Christmas. My MIL (including us) had no idea of who was doing these 12 Days of Singing Santa. It made us think of all the good people we know who would have done such a thing. Thanks you, kids/kiddos!!!!!

Just Call Me Paula

Last week was our Christmas Girl's Night Out (GNO.) We have been together once a month for about 25 years. This month we celebrated at BFF Cathy's home (my old home....sigh.....)
and it was WONDERFUL! Everything was perfect. Well, almost.

Cathy set a beautiful table. In the center of each plate was a gift. See the above. A brightly colored Christmas towel with an ornament attached. Cathy then said, "I know you will enjoy looking at the ornament...." We didn't know what was up with that.

Then one by one people started laughing.

The ornaments were personalized. Cathy didn't know that when she purchased them. So, we had Martha and Kevin and Paula and Destiny! We called each other our new names all night.

Oh, at least when you are getting closer to 100 than one, it is good to know your friends are with you!!!

The Night Before Christmas

I haven't been very faithful this season of sharing Christmas ideas (although I have a ton I'd like to share) but like you- I've been busy and busier and some things have to go. Someone asked me if I didn't feel the pressure to write everyday because other people are reading it....and I thought of Thoreau who said, "We have become the tools of our tools." In other words, it would be easy for a blog to become the master of me, rather than me governing the blog. For those of you that do read here, thank you! I never even thought of other people reading every thought that pops into my head when I started writing 3 years ago. But through this I have met some wonderful people and love hearing about your life and the things we have in common or not. I hope your Christmas is peaceful and filling and reflective and joyous. I hope that those who read my words never question my great love for the Savior. That Jesus Christ is a governing agent in how I view the world, how I try and overcome weaknesses and try to be good and serve other, through whom I am filled with joy. This past year, studying his life in a new way, I am overcome with love and adoration for His sacrifice on our behalf. I believe life has a purpose and knowing that purpose makes you live differently. I celebrate not just His birth, but His life. I think about and study his words everyday and He is the anchor in the midst of the storm.

Some of my grand kids are pondering and wondering about Santa Claus. Just so you know, I love and adore Santa. Since I live in metaphor, I have no trouble understanding that Santa is but a symbol of the love and abundance that God gives us. The "spirit" of Santa is real....and I love it. One of my favorite gifts each year (and one I beg for) is the continuing pictures of our old world Santa with my kiddos. I have so many now they are taking over the house but they fill me with joy.

Let me share with you this year's pictures....(minus one set!)

(minus Brandi's)Our tradition this night is our Snicky Snack Dinner. We have cheese fondue and eat appetizers and all the wonderful treats our friends have brought us. Thank you, wonderful friends!

We will watch a family nativity and have a short program focused on the birth of our Savior. Hopefully the Wilson family will come caroling (and I will cry....) (it's tradition)

then

The kiddos's jammies will be ready to pop out of their boxes....and the kids will undress/dress in a flash and I'll try to corral them together for a picture but some will be jumping on the sofas and Grandpa will be swinging a lasso and someone will be hit in the nose and crying and I'll be growling and the dads will be oblivious........

And hopefully the kiddos will love their personalized books...that will actually mean more to them years in the future.

Sigh......

It's Christmas. Hope you are ready for all that love!

Outtakes Revisited

I can't really re-post yesterday's Nativity without posting the outtakes written the day after.

"Remember, if Christmas isn't found in your heart, you won't find it under a tree." ~ Charlotte Carpenter.

Don't you just love angels? Has everyone said, "Oh my gosh! Aren't those the cutest angels in all of heaven?" Sorry, you can't have them. They're mine and I'm not sharing...

Heidi is an angel but I guess you could surmise she's a little imp. She's got her grandpa's heart!

This is what movie star angels look like. Have you ever heard an angel belly laugh? I ADORE this girl!

I suppose you have thought that you don't have to change diapers in heaven. Not so....someone wasn't smelling heavenly......

But she cleans up nicely! Just trying to get used to wings. Don't you want to eat her?

Okay, here's the angel with attitude. She's my girl. She's ALWAYS an angel with me. I think her mommy might give her to me at Christmas.....

I was kind of thinking one of David's lassos would have helped rounding up these wiseguys!

This wiseman looks weary. He looks like someone should have taken the red out of his eyes. Did you know that one of wisemen is fluent in Espanol? Feliz Navidad....I think it is pretty funny his beard/mouth hole is hung up on his chin.

Yikes! What doesn't go on behind the scenes! Mary and Joseph can do some major rockin'. I know Mary is about to deliver twins but really, girl, what's with the dress? I think we'll get retakes with this one! (Grandma edited it this year....)

Absolutely twins.....

I would post more pictures of our two babies but frankly, it was a long night. Think major chaos. Think pandemonium. Think wild children, frantic moms and grandma, think camera that keeps running out of battery. Think men who are suppose to be watching half the children who are not yet in costume. See men talking and watching sports on tv. See men oblivious to children running through the house like thundering camels. See Brandi looking at me shaking her head. "What was I thinking?" I was thinking idyllic. I was thinking peaceful. I was thinking Hallmark card. I was thinking that 3 men could easily handle 4 kids at a time while we were taking pictures. I was dreaming. I was dreaming of a warm bath. I was dreaming of quiet. But we still had dinner to get through. I quietly put away the nativity puppet show that was going to take place. I quickly dismissed the idea of Santa Advents we were going to make. I did what only a desperate grammie does in that situation. I hauled out more candy. Gave those kids more sugar so they were really wound up. REALLY big suckers. Ice cream bites. Then we sent all those wild Israelites home with their parents. I won't even mention the one child that was left behind. Aren't family home evenings great!!!

The Nativity Revisited

This posting is from 2 years ago at this time. I've been sick this weekend (the "hawk" powed me!) but the list goes on! We have done a lot of nativities through the years but this one makes me smile....

The William's Nativity

First the angels started singing in heaven. They were a happy, rowdy bunch of angels.

Mary and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem to pay their taxes. How would YOU like to ride a donkey all the way to Bethlehem....and 9 months pregnant?

Inn after inn turned them away. The last innkeeper said perhaps they would like to sleep in his stable with the animals.....

This was Mary's reaction! Joseph is feeling bad that he didn't make reservations earlier.

Surprise! Little baby-cakes was born that night! Hurray!

Wait! We have another baby Jesus? There were twins? Actually, we got two little babies this year and BOTH insisted on being the star of the show. We LOVE baby Jesus twice as much!

Herod wasn't too happy when he learned that prophesy was being fulfilled. He saw the new star. He knew he was in trouble. He sent out ferocious guards to find the new baby (babies.)

The wisemen knew how to find the baby but didn't let on to the guards. Boy, these wisemen were good looking besides being wise.

The shepherd visited the new baby (babies) as well but Grandma wouldn't let the sheep come in the house.

Sweet Corn Tamale Cakes/Copycat Cheesecake Factory

When I was in Vegas, Lauri and I went to Cheesecake Factory after we saw a show. Lauri said I needed to try the Corn Cakes....it was love at first bite. Then I got an email from an old college roomie talking about meeting up in January and she mentioned them as well. I thought surely I could find the recipe on the Internet (don't call me Shirley....name that movie.....) and here is what I found. (Don't be daunted by the many ingredients....just take it step by step. You could easily substitute fresh pico de gallo for the Salsa Verde. It is the cakes that are so wonderful.) (If you don't like to cook, head to your nearest Cheesecake Factory. Find one in a warm climate and work on your tan.)

Sweet Corn Tamale Cakes
Copycat Cheesecake Factory

For Southwestern Sauce
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon water
3/4 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon paprika

3. Prepare southwestern sauce by combining all ingredients. Chill.
4. Preheat oven to 400°F.
5. Prepare the tamale cakes by chopping 1 cup of the frozen corn in a food processor until it's coarsely pureed. Combine pureed corn with softened butter, sugar, and salt. Blend well.
6. Add masa and flour and blend well. Mix in the remaining 1/2 cup of frozen corn kernels by hand.
7. Measure 1/2 cup portions of the mixture and form it into 3" wide patties with your hands. Arrange the patties on a baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the cakes are browned on the bottom.
8. Carefully flip all cakes with a spatula and bake for an additional 5 to 7 minutes or until other side is browned.
9. Assembly: Place all three cakes on a warmed serving platter. Dollop each with one of the three sauces. Garnish with diced avocado, cilantro and a dollop of sour cream.

How I'm feeling after all the Christmas goodies that keep coming into our home! All that neighborly love is settling on my hips!

This Week

Every day is so busy that I haven't really had time to sit and share a few things from my heart.

This past weekend while we were gone to Vegas (and Pam, David was there at the rodeo/Cowboy Christmas while you were there but I came the next day! Next time let's meet!) Brendalyn's dad passed away as well as LaRue Mackay , someone who used lived in our Ward that I loved. Both of their funerals were Wed. Because I was planning on a meet-in-the-middle with Sophia, I was just able to attend Brendalyn's dad's viewing.

Brendalyn's dad has suffered with Alzheimer's for 8 years...the last 4 years being really difficult. Her mom has taken care of him at home, and prayed to be able to do so (as opposed to putting him in a home.) It was hard work, on all of the family. Yesterday my sister-in-law, Laraine, called to tell me her brother-in-law, Gary Jaggi, died out of the blue with a heart attack. These are all people whose deaths matter to me because the people closest to them matter to me. My heart is very tender, almost shaky as I reflect on the many upheavals going on. This darling girl in our Ward (young mom) said something in Church a while ago that I laugh about, but it perfectly sums up life. She was talking about a bird hitting her window and being knocked out. She rescued the bird and had it in the house for awhile until it came to and seemed strong enough. She took the little bird outside, encouraging it to fly.......until finally it lifted its wings and flew......

Unfortunately, a hawk lives in our neighborhood.

Pow! It was gone.

Natalie (the young mom) said she felt like life was that way and made the motion with her hand of a roller coaster or rolling wave. Life.

Yesterday my wonderful friend, Valene and I were talking. We were discussing this roller coaster of emotion that comes with the holidays. We both agreed that our expectations are just too high....and by that I mean, we both know what it is like to feel the Spirit......and somehow, when the trials of the world keep popping their heads into our lives, I feel like the little bird! Pow!

I don't mean for this to sound morose. Last night David and I watched T & T's kids. (I told David I can't watch them by myself....the boys are a little WILD! Of course, David makes it worse since he's roping them in the house and encouraging them to jump on everything!) For the most part, I got to hold baby Sadi. It is like holding Rylee all over again....she looks just like her. I loved watching the kid's faces, hearing the funny things they say. Sadi has learned to crawl and she is pulling herself up! I'm not ready for her NOT to be a little baby! She just loves to catch your eye so she can smile.

How can my heart not sing?

It is going to be a busy weekend. Two nieces and one baby coming tonight (Mallory/Ashlee and Crae) and tomorrow my nephew Dee and wife Christine and 3 kiddos are coming. My MIL can hardly stand it. She loves all these kids so much! And I do too!

I have loved all the Christmas letters we've received. I might be doing mine on New Year's Eve but I truly look forward to getting pictures/letters, ecards and emails giving us an update on friends and family. Patty, a cousin in California, included this quote in her letter:

"To catch the real meaning of the "Spirt of Christmas," we need only to drop the last syllable of the word, and it becomes the "Spirit of Christ." It beckons us to follow him and become worthy of the blessedness which he promised. " Hugh B. Brown

p.s the Singing Santa continues to delight my MIL. Her optic tree is slowly getting decorated. Each ornament has come with the words to a Christmas song- a snowflake (Let It Snow), an angel (Angels We Have Heard On High) etc. Thank you, thank you, thank you, you pixies, whoever you are......

OOMS's Berry Salad

OOMS (Our Own Martha Stewart) brought a wonderful salad to the Bake Off the other night. It had just a few twists that I loved. First of all, it was beautiful. She used a wide shallow dish so the lettuce is spread out (one of my favorite ways to serve salad...on a platter) and then she piled everything on top. Sprinkle all of the toppings evenly over the top. First the Feta, then the berries, and top it off with the pistachios. Just before serving drizzle the dressing all over the top.

Here is her recipe:

Lisa's Berry Salad

Dressing

1 cup mayo

1 cup vegetable oil

3/4 c sugar

3/4 cup red wine vinegar

1/3 cup diced red onion

2 tsp dried mustard

2 tsp poppy seeds

1 tsp salt

dash of pepper

Mix & Chill

Salad ingredients

1 head red leaf

1 head iceberg

feta cheese

1 package blackberries
1 package raspberries

pistachios (Lisa told me she purchases large bags of shelled pistachios at WalMart.)

You can always add another berry like strawberries or pomegranate if you want

Christmas Bake Off

Last night was one of my very favorite Christmas activities- our Relief Society (women's group at church) Christmas Bake Off. It is usually a progressive affair. Last night we visited 3 beautiful homes. I LOVE to see people's Christmas decorations. We had appetizers at the first home, delicious main dishes at the next, then desserts at the last with a short (and beautiful) singing program at the end. I am already scrambling to get the recipes for dozens of dishes but this is one I called on as soon as I got home. In October, when I went to a friend's boutique, I sampled a cherry chocolate bar that I flipped over but I haven't gotten the recipe yet. Last night Cecily Woodbury made a similar bar and the following is the recipe. However, Cecily didn't frost her bars (and they were fabulous un-frosted) but I also found this frosting on the Internet with the recipe as well. If you like chocolate, coconut and maraschino cherries, this is a festive bar for you. If you don't like the above, give me another day and I'll find another yummy for you.

BLACK BOTTOM CHERRY CREAM BARS

1/3 c. butter

2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 c. sugar
1 egg
3/4 c. flour
1 cup drained and halved maraschino cherries
2 c. grated coconut
1 cup sweetened condensed milk (not the full can)

Melt butter; add cocoa and sugar. Blend in flour and egg; mix well. Pat into 9"x9" pan. (Cecily always doubles hers in a 9 x 13 pan.) Place cherries, cut in half on chocolate mixture. Combine coconut and condensed milk. Spoon in dobs over the cherries, spread to cover. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Frost warm, cool and cut into small squares.

FROSTING:

5 tbsp. butter

1 c. sugar
1/3 c. milk
1 c. miniature marshmallows
1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips

Boil butter, sugar and milk for 1 minute. Add marshmallows and chocolate chips.

Singing Santa

Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy -- because we will always want to have something else or something more. David Steindle-Rast

I just wanted to share something that I am grateful for. Ever since our children were small, we always did special neighborhood gifts, pixies, secret Santas....and all these activities were some of our favorite holiday memories. I was talking to BFF Cathy the other day about neighbor gift giving. People either love it or don't. I do. Not only do I love it but it matters a GREAT deal to me. Maybe it is a right-brained thing but it is something that is a big part of Christmas for me. I love people....and I love to make or get just even little "somethings" to say I care and am thinking of them during the holidays. It isn't about competition or going beyond your means or making someone else feel like they have to give you something in return. It is about love and joy and giving, pure and simple. I love the "connectedness" that I feel when making or delivering neighborhood gifts. I love the tradition that I do with my girls of spending an evening making these "delights" together. I love every knock on my door during the holidays that bring a neighbor or friend bringing a treat or singing a song. It is part of the magic of Christmas for me.

This post isn't really about that, it is about a Christmas kindness. Two nights ago, we got a knock on our door....and a surprise was left on our door step for my mother-in-law. It was from a secret Santa...an optic carousel Christmas tree. Attached was a note about the 12 carols of Christmas....this being day one...and the words to the song "Oh Christmas Tree" were on the tag. My sweet mother-in-law has been so delighted and "can't imagine" who would do such a thing for her. She has been as excited as a little child! The next evening, she received another anonymous gift, this time a crocheted and starched snowflake ornament with the words to the song "Let it Snow." Again, such joy.

And I'm not talking just my mother-in-law. This act of kindness has touched me deeply. I think of the many years of doing the same kind of thing....not realizing the joy that can come from simple thoughtfulness. It has made "my" Christmas....my heart has been touched that someone else (or a group) has extended themselves for my MIL.

When the wisemen sought out the baby Jesus, they took gifts. It wasn't like he NEEDED those things....but it was an extension of their love and adoration.

That's the way I feel.

And, please, if anyone involved in this kindness for my MIL is reading this, please know that your work (and it IS work) has cheered the heart of a wonderful woman. Your unexpected kindness has gladdened her heart and lifted mine. Thank you!

Festive Apples and Dip

This is a recipe that I found in the Taste of Home magazine. I loved the colors....it sings holidays. I've added the recipe that was featured and also Brandi's that she brought to Thanksgiving....another dip with apples.

Festive Apple Dip

1 package 8-oz. cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/2 cup miniature marshmallows

1 jar (11-3/4 oz.) hot fudge ice cream topping

2 T. chopped peanuts

3 each medium red and green apples, cut into wedges

2 T. lemon juice

In a small mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, peanut butter, brown sugar and vanilla; stir in marshmallows. Spoon half into a 3-cup bowl; spread with half of the hot fudge topping. Repeat layers. Sprinkle with nuts. Toss the apples with lemon juice or pineapple juice. Serve immediately with dip.

Yield: about 2 cups

Brandi's Toffee Dip for Apples

1 pkg. toffee bits

12 oz. cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

Mix together and serve with sliced apples

Yumo!

The Wondrous Gift of Christmas

Yesterday we had the most amazing experience. Each year, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir puts on a Christmas event that is televised and shown on PBS among other places. I put in for tickets way back in October. You can only request 4 tickets and the odds of getting them (there were 5 performances, I believe) are really slim. I had Brandi try for them and Tenille also. I didn't think we'd get tickets but lo, and behold, tickets showed up at Tenille's house this week! Each year the concert features a narrator and a singer. This year the narrator was the author David McCullough and the singer was Natalie Cole. There were over 20,000 people there during Sunday mornings performance. David and I took David's mom- who lives for the choir broadcast each week (along with Lawrence Welk)...and Brandi. As Brandi and I talked later, it was one of those experiences that you really can't describe in a way that unless you were there, you could imagine. The choir, the orchestra, the dancers, the Christmas music, the decorations.....the Spirit.

It was just over-the-top wonderful. I love this season!

Freezing Cold in Vegas/Christmas Ice Ring

We got home late last night from Vegas. And can I say, you go SOUTH to get warmer! It was FREEZING there! It started to warm up a titch but that didn't matter since we were coming home. But it was a wonderful trip with my cowboy (Pam! Ha! Cattleman!)

There are a few things I wanted to share.

First of all, to each their own.

My husband thinks that manure smells like perfume. I try not to dwell on his taste since it might be a reflection of me.....

We spent quite a bit of time at Southpointe....a newer casino on the outskirts that hosted the World Series team roping. David roped there last year and now I see what all the excitement is about. We watched roping and roping and roping. We got to see Cousin Casey's (not my cousin) dad rope (he didn't do so good this year) and some others that David knows. I went to two nights of Nationals which was amazing. We saw an arena record broken in team roping and then the next team broke that record! And saw a boy we like to follow (Cody Hancock) knocked unconscious by a bull (although he rode his ride and won the night)....which brought up a whole lot of bad memories of our nephew, Buff (really my nephew.) Speaking of Buff, if you want to raise a cowboy, you have to name him a cowboy name in the beginning. I love the names of the cowboys.....Speed, Cash, Tuf, Chance, Bull. Wait? I don't think one was named Bull. I'm pretty sure I made that up. But the others were true names.

Another thing about cowboys is other than the smell, they are pretty sharp. I don't know why this seems out of character but the cowboys there and ones I know wear sharply pressed starched shirts AND jeans. No wearing your jeans right out of the dryer. I remember just shaking my head when nephew Dee lived with us and he'd take his jeans to the cleaners. But it was a good thing because that's how he eventually met his DARLING wife. So I guess there is a purpose in all things. David tells me there is a dress standard for competing. Cowboy hat or no hat. No baseball caps allowed. And the shirt has to have long sleeves. Go figure.

I didn't buy one thing with barbed wire. But I'll tell you...I've never seen so much flash and bling at Cowboy Christmas and also the one at the convention center. Everything sparkles.

I did go one night to a Vegas show with Lauri....Menopause, The Musical. Unless you are closer to 100 than one, you just wouldn't get it.......

Fabulous time. It was the perfect date week with my hubby.

And we came home to a storm. The following picture doesn't look too enticing since it is snowing outside and I've cranked up the fireplace AND heater.....

but it does look festive for a party.

I loved this picture when I saw it in a cooking magazine. The ice ring is beautiful. If you are throwing a party this season, don't forget how easy it is to make an ice ring. The magazine's recipe called for distilled water....I have no idea why. Give it a try:

Ice Ring Wreath

4 cups cold distilled water, divided

3 large limes

1 package (12 ounces) fresh cranberries

Pour 1 cup of distilled water into a 4-1/2 cup ring mold lightly coated with non-stick cooking spray. Peel limes, keeping peel in large pieces. Using miniature tree cookie cutters, cut trees from the peel. Place shapes upside down in top of ring mod. Save lime pulp for another use. Place cranberries between tree shapes. Rearrange if necessary before freezing. Freeze until solid. Gently add remaining water; freeze. To use, wrap bottom of solidly frozen mold in warm towel until loosened or dip mold in pan of warm water. Float ice ring, fruit side up in cold punch.

I like the looks of this ice ring A LOT....however, when I do ice rings, I don't like water melting into my punch. Would this look as cute with lemonade? Could you still see the cranberries and lime? I have actually taken plastic holly and berries and frozen them in the ice rings before. The weirdest thing I have frozen in ice is plastic baby dolls. Tiny ones. For baby showers. Have you ever played that game. Everyone gets a drink with ice cubes and one ice cube has a baby doll frozen in it. The first one that delivers (the ice melts the baby free) wins a prize.

Okay, I totally know that the baby in the ice cube has totally nothing to do with Christmas. Sorry. You know how weird my mind works.

During the summer, my favorite ice ring is a pina colada which makes a great slush. Heh, THAT would be good with cranberries floating in it.

But today, I'm not totally convinced. Today is definitely a hot chocolate day. And I'm glad to be home...

A Basket of Bucket

David and I are still in Las Vegas, having a wonderful time but I had written this post before I left about my Bucket group last week. Valene hosted a gratitude luncheon which I mentioned, but I didn't mention all the sweet gifts that everyone brought for each other. Each gift seemed to reflect the giver's personality. I thought I would share a couple, in case they spark ideas for you to give.

Remember, the greatest gift is not found in a store nor under a tree, but in the hearts of true friends.

Sheron gave us a darling cello bag with two limes and a red juicer. It looked so festive!

The tag said: "May you "ream" out all the wonderful flavors & memories the Christmas season has to offer."

Diana gave us homemade bread with homemade jam. Although both were tasty, what I loved was the tag attached saying "May the message of the season when we celebrate the birth of the Bread of Life in Bethlehem ( Hebrew: bayt-leh-khem) (and note: yes Diana really speaks Hebrew! I'm telling you, I have amazing friends!) -House of Bread- bring you sweet jubilation."

Did you know Bethlehem meant "house of bread?" I love that. What perfect symbolism for this Christmas season, of He who is the "bread of life."

Married to a Cowboy

As you know, I didn't know he was when we got married. I lived with him for 25 years without steers and saddles and big huge belt buckets being a part of our life. He's always had ropes but I thought that was just a little quirk. I tell people it is why we had 5 children....so he'd have something to rope....that wasn't me.

Every year, the first two weeks of December in Las Vegas is National Rodeo Finals. It is big time stuff....for all things associated with rodeo. David has gone forever (not roping, but watching) either with me or our good friends, the Barnsons....or taken some of our boys. One year BFF Cathy and I flew down to meet our husbands- and hit air turbulence- and thought we were going to die. I've told you all about that....

David flew to Las Vegas yesterday. I'm flying there tomorrow. I thought our GNO Christmas party was tonight and I didn't want to miss it...forgetting that it was postponed until later.

But I've been busy with a two page list (nothing easy to check off so I would feel good about myself) so I've needed these two extra days.

This is David's thing. The night before he left, he was as giddy as a little kid on Christmas Eve.

There's a horse auction (heaven help me!) and the World Series Rodeo (that his brother, Lyndi is competing in) and cowboy boutiques.....where you can find a million uses for barbed wire. It is as foreign to me as Mars...

But, I love a cowboy. This is what makes him happy, therefore, I'm thrilled to be his partner. But I did put my foot down when he made the comment, while packing, "Darn. I REALLY want two hats there but I can't put the extra one in my bag...and I can only wear one..... do you think....."

I don't THINK so!

We're staying with the Barnson's in their new home. Can't wait to see it. Can't wait to have a little vacation with my hubby. Since I'm gearing up for all things western....and since I put some cowboy advice in Parker's book that I finished up today....I'll share a little with you. Only cowboys call it "Cowboy Logic" not "cowboy advice."

-Don't squat with your spurs on.
-Don't judge people by their relatives.
-Behind every successful rancher is a wife who works in town.
-When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
-Talk slowly, think quickly.
-Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.
-Don't interfere with something that ain't botherin' you none.
-Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.
-The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller.
-If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.
-If it don't seem like it's worth the effort, it probably ain't.
-It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep.
-Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got.
-Don't worry about bitin' off more'n you can chew; your mouth is probably a whole lot bigger'n you think.
-Always drink upstream from the herd.
-If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there with ya.

Taking the O Y out of Joy

I love this picture. It makes me happy just looking at it...you know me and snowmen. And I love joy.

I haven't been blogging since I'm working on the kiddo's books for Christmas. I've put in so many hours taking pictures and trying to figure out a new program to turn my creations into keepsakes for my kiddos. Today was the deadline for making sure the books would be back for Christmas.....

The program crashed on Saturday.....

and I wasn't able to get it restored (hours and hours of IT frustration today) until late this afternoon.

So, I have books uncompleted.

And I find myself going "Oh, Why?" "Why" when I'm trying to do something special? Something memorable?

I realize it isn't the end of the world but it really mattered to me. The books can be completed and be late. But it let the air out of my bubble.

I've been working on Parker's book and I wanted it to be a book with encouraging quotes. I've found wonderful quotes on making a difference, handling disappointment, setting goals, finding strength, being a team player. I've had to smile at the irony because I've been in mourning for a few days. What I "planned" isn't going to work out just the way I wanted. One of the quotes that I am using is one of Stephen Covey's...which is perfect for me to remember....especially during this wonderful month-

"The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing."

I forgot that for awhile.....
