No Bake Num Num

Here we are- the last day of 2018!  That's insane!  So much has gone on this year- good, bad and ugly.  The ugly is my arm but let's not talk about that!  Looking forward to getting together tonight with friends- a group that has gotten together for almost 40 years but some years it's only 3 revolving couples.  Tonight there were suppose to be 4 but Brendalyn just called and although she has been sick all week and feeling better, her husband Joe and son, Rocky, visiting from back East- caught it from her so they won't be there.  Just us and Elaine and Roger Christensen and Penny and Tom Gwilliam at the Gwilliams.  I'm taking the main dish- Teriyaki Salmon and also Teriyaki Chicken and Broccoli.  And hot fudge for the dessert.  We'll have a yummy dinner, do white elephants, play some games.  Tom has put together a video of us all through the years.  I can't wait to see it!  Love these friends!

Mallorie and Sam and kids came today from Idaho to merry with Brooke and Tanner and kids tonight. While I had her cornered, I had Mal whip up some No Bake cookies that we wanted to try when she was here a few weeks ago.  They are No Bake Cookie Butter cookies!  Oh num!!!!

I love to fly Delta because then I get those awesome Biscoff cookies.  I also buy them at the store and hoard them all to myself,  Friend Libby in the neighborhood gave me some Biscoff Cookie Butter for a cheer up present.  I have been saving it for this moment!!!  I told Mal it is the next cookie for her bake-off!  Recipe on the cooking blog!

P.S.  We have tons of snow so that means a huge sledding party tomorrow!  Yeah!  I love sledding parties on New Year's Day!!!

Sunday Blues

I haven't said too much about our service mission.  I do love our Sideways boys.  I love all the people we work with.  I have no problem during our weekly service...…

but Sundays?  Sundays used to be my favorite day of the week.  Sundays were a filling station for me when I was empty.  I looked forward to worshipping and being filled with spiritual conversation and lessons and scripture and beautiful music.

And now Sundays are the longest and hardest day of the week for me.  Attending our little branch with the sideways- both boys and girls- where everything is on the most basic level-the music painful and worrying about every one of these kiddos- I don't know- it's hard to explain.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not passive about my spirituality.  I read my scriptures and ponder every day. I love the scriptures!  I attend the temple almost weekly.  I serve others with all my heart.  But still- on Sundays I yearn for that spiritual enlightenment that used to come so easily at church.

I'm probably feeling  blue because I'm not a creature that likes change.  My home Ward is like an extension of my family.  I love and miss the people there so I guess I am mourning.  And then there's my arm.  I'm frustrated and exhausted from this heavy weight that just "hangs" on me and likes to throb.

I've read a couple of things the past couple of days to help me.  One is the ideas (Jeffrey R. Holland) that "this service isn't easy because salvation isn't a cheap experience.  Salvation never was easy.  How could we believe these life experiences would be easy for us when it was never, ever easy for Him?  It seems to me that we all need to spend at least a few moments in (our) Gethseames."  (I'm paraphrasing this)

I think of my sweet boy Josh on his mission in Texas.  He's had things thrown at him, cursed at, rained on day after day, riding a bicycle in the rain and wind and mud day in and day out, away from all his friends and family- and I'm whining because I "don't feel filled" during Sunday services.

Today the Come Follow Me program has started- and as I read the first lesson, I was touched by the words of David A. Bednar who taught "As learners, you and I are to act and be doers of the word and not simply hearers who are only acted upon.  Are you and I agents who act and seek learning by faith or are we waiting to be taught and acted upon?  (yep, that would be me on Sundays.)  Learning by faith requires spiritual, mental, and physical exertion and not just passive reception."

So, that for me, means bucking up as my grandson Josh has bucked up.  I will figure out how I will do this with God's help.  I will find my joy, not just in Sundays, but always in the Lord.

Snicky Snack

Okay I like photo booths- what can I say?  Snicky Snack Christmas Eve was so wonderful, I cried with gratitude in my evening prayers.  I love our family and love that they love each other.  We eat- have fun- take pictures, the kiddos do their gift exchange and Grandma (that's me) gives out the Christmas jammies.  We had people coming and going this year so we couldn't do a nativity but I'm starting early on our next one before our littles get too big.

Whew!  I would do some serious photo editing but then I'd have to whine about my arm again!

Hand Crawl

I must admit- I'm not too happy with my arm.  I think I'm in more discomfort that I was the month after the surgery.  The elbow is horrible and goes down my arm to my wrist and hand.  It all throbs.  I am also doing the awful exercises.  The dreaded hand crawl.  I do them twice a day in the hot steaming shower to have more flexibility.

I have to admit I'm a little discouraged.  A little weepy.  A little poor me and will this ever end?

Then look what I found....at the very moment I needed it.  It looks like me doing the hand crawl in my shower and Elder Holland is whispering in my ear!  I CAN do this!!!!!

(okay, a titch creepy Elder Holland is in my shower but heh, I'll take it!)

Llama Christmas

Here is me with half the grands.  The Christmas jammies this year were llamas.  I love these kiddos so much!!!!  (to be continued...)

More Christmas Pics

On the Sunday before Christmas, Brandi and Doug and crew went downtown by the homeless shelters and served chili and cornbread to hundreds of homeless.  They've done this a couple of times.  I hope next year I can go (and make a huge pot of chili!)  Afterwards they took in the lights at temple square.  Beautiful!  Such an awesome opportunity during this wonderful season.  (They go in the summer and do peanut butter and jam sandwiches and chips, I think.)

Belated Christmas Pics

Son Ryan has a business mini suite at the Vivant Center (or whatever it is called- Energy Solutions?  it frequently changes names depending on the sponsor.) (It is our huge basketball/concert arena in downtown SLake.)  Not a suite but a sweet way for 4 people to enjoy whatever event is going on there.  All through the holidays, members of the family have enjoyed ballgames, concerts, Harlem Globetrotters and Disney on Ice.  Instead of a closed off room (the suites), it is your own little sitting area with 4 rollaway chairs, a counter and $120 worth of concessions!  Woot!  Woot!  On Christmas day, T and T's family got to use the mini suite (Jazz killed Portland Trail Blazers).  Because it was Christmas, and because Sadie stands out like a lightbulb- she was chosen to visit with Santa with 3 other kids while he read a story- and it was on the huge Jumbo Tron.

Lots of uninhibited people dance wildly during the game, hoping to get on the Jumbo Tron.  Sadie was in her prime- dancing like the wild girl she is.....

until security had to ask her to stop....(I think it was the rolling chairs.)  One of the security asked T and T if she was ALWAYS  this energetic.

Yep, pretty much!  Santa's lucky she didn't do handsprings around him!

Crazy Hair

Before I report on our marvelous Christmas, I want to share a funny thing.  I was mentioning to some of the family that one of the hardest things of having lost my use of my right hand/arm is not being able to do my hair.  I thought it would be easy enough to have my husband just brush my hair back and put it in a pony tail.  Not!!!!  Come to find out, men don't naturally know how to do a pony tail!  David struggled to figure out the rubber band part!!!  Crazy!  He's a little better but not perfect.  I won't complain.  But then Rylee and Sadie taught us a new trick! Hysterical!

We figured out if he used our Wet Vac, I could dry and pony my hair all at once!

2018 Christmas Letter

                                               Merry Christmas from The Williams

Life is good.  Life is challenging.  I think we’ll survive.

Highlights and Lowlights of this past year:

-I lost my Dad the end of March.  So happy for him to be reunited with Mom but sooo sad for us.  We loved this funny, entertaining and wonderful man.  We had a private graveside and my brother Gary and his wife Cher, Charlie (a family friend) and David and I each threw a Wurther's in his grave along with a Skipbo card.  He and Mom played Skipbo each morning to decide who was the boss for the day….

-Our annual Lake Powell trip was a great success- which means we had a great time and no one got hurt (well, emergency room hurt). A few were missing (“were” missing, not “went” missing) but the rest of us played strong!  Lake Powel is our happy place.

-David and I were called on a service mission working with what I call “our sideways boys.”  Troubled youth for a variety of reasons. After the shell-shock wore off, I realized they aren’t much different than our own kids (well, a couple of our kids-lol).  We have found we can love naughty boys!  Quite a switch from serving in the Draper Temple for the past 3 years.

-David didn’t break any bones team roping this year (last year it was his rotator cuff).  He is going to Las Vegas in December to compete in the World Series Roping (Woot! Woot!)  Proud of him and his million giant belt buckles.  I like his roping a little more since he has been splitting his winnings with me. Lol

- David does hard physical work on our property every day.  His biggest project after the sale of the last of our trees on our front two acres was to till and plant pasture and then to build a gabion fence.  It has been a hoot as, really, DOZENS of people stop to ask him what he is doing or to tell him he’s doing a good job or if something is crooked or question why did we not replant the trees? I’ve even had phone calls!  Everyone has an opinion!  I marvel at David’s physical abilities.  I, on the other hand, excel at slug-ness.

-I did rip out my rotator cuff (nothing as exciting as when I broke my back playing pickleball the year before)- and am currently in week 4 of the dreaded sling.  I thought I was going to die many times- mainly of boredom.  I also had my cataracts fixed in August and now can see everything I’ve been missing and even found out I have a few grandkids I didn’t know I had!  (18 grands and 6 grand-doggies).  My recovery has been blessed by the multitudes of great family and friends who have faithfully served David and I through my recovery.  I will blame my new 10 pounds on them!

- We did have a great trip to Guatemala in the spring for grandson Josh’s “last hurrah” (we had several of those!) before leaving for his mission in Dallas Texas- Spanish Speaking.  He entered the Language Training Center in Mexico City as a native speaker (hysterical)- and actually has had a hard time adjusting to the “gringos.”  While in Guatemala, we were able to visit the library that Josh started in a small village as his Eagle project.  Elijah is doing his project now of adding the adult section.   While we were there, we also got to participate in one of Ryan’s Humanitarian projects which is called 1st Desk which provides jobs for countries and desks for school children.  Ryan also made several trips to help when one of Guatemala’s volcanoes blew the week after we came home.  Ryan still serves as a Bishop in a Hispanic ward.  Thus, Josh’s confusion!

-       3 kiddos in college- Bri graduated and is teaching, Connor is in his 3rd year in Juneau, Alaska and Parker his 2nd at SUU in Cedar City.

-       -We love seeing all our kiddos in various events although they are way more active than we can keep up with.  Boston’s baseball team won at Cooperstown, NY during the summer which is every 12-year-old baseball boy’s dream. Annee Bug’s horse drill team marched in formation in lots of parades this summer and competitions taking State.  We love successes for Annee- who has the challenge of Asperger’s- and she finds her greatest happiness on the back of a horse.  David cowboys up by not rolling his eyes when she paints Pokey’s hooves with glitter!  Other news- youngest kiddo Summer mastered the potty!  Yay! We have soccer players and dancers and gymnasts and piano players and thespians and singers and basketball players and debaters and march to their own drummers and straight arrows.  We love them all!

Life always has those hard things thrown in as well.  With a few complications (but not as bad as last year) Parker had his last surgery (after about a dozen) to correct the problems associated with cleft palate at birth.  He’s a handsome dude that has had to endure hard stuff in his youth. He’s a survivor!

We love the Lord!  He is the corner stone of our family and our home.  During this Christmas time, we gratefully offer praise to Him who loves each of us individually and guides us through the hard times with His grace.  May we each find time, one on one, in contemplation with our Savior, during this Season and always to make our lives what He would have them be.

                                                     Marilyn and David

p.s.  Not to brag or anything but I typed this whole letter left-handed with one finger!

More Cookie Exchange

I told you that niece Mallorie had a cookie exchange last Saturday and baked all her cookies while she was at my house.  Her Carmelita cookie tied for first place- they had a re-vote and Mal voted for the other gal- and the other gal won!  So Mal's a winner in my book!

I loved how all the gals were invited to wear their pajamas.  The hostess had a photo taking area.

Besides prizes for the best tasting cookie, she also had prizes for the best presentation and the most unique treat.  Look at some of these creations!  So fun.  I love a good party!  They inspire me!

Christmas Girl's Night Out

It started with an invitation.

The table was set.

The food- my oh my!

Appetizers made by Funny Kathy-
Cheese Bacon Pinwheels (one of my favorite appetizers!

and a new yummy cheese dip.  I will be making both of these for our annual Snicky Snack meal on Christmas Eve.

Main Course;

Teriyaki Salmon topped with Siracha Cream

Butter Lemon Shrimp- but I forgot the butter- Boo!  Still- it's hard to ruin shrimp unless you overcook it.

Sides:
a magnificent salad by Funny Kathy

Twice- Baked potato with Rauclett cheese casserole (I call it "have a little potato with your heavenly cheese!)  This was a winner-winner-chicken-dinner recipe.  Over the top with the crunchies on the top

Drink- the frosted glasses with pomegranates and a Cranberry Sprite with skewers of sugared cranberries on top.

Dessert-
Sliced Green Apples with my favor new caramel I found this fall in Leavenworth- Cinnamon Pear Caramel (I've ordered 3 cases for gift giving!) drizzled on top.  And I made little Swig cookies as well.

Favor:
Rocky Road Fudge in Christmas Cookie Cutter
AND Funny Kathy made little treat bags with homemade turtles inside.

I love these women in my life- Cathy Olsen, Brendalyn Baer, Kathy Wilson, Terri DeJulis, Tauna Isaac, Loretta Duncan and Elaine Christensen.  We've been together since we were young mothers.  We've been through the war together (figuratively) and celebrated with tears.  How lucky I am to have wonderful friends- and this party was my gift to them.  It's all about showing your love by serving.  (and in case you were wondering, no, I couldn't do all that cooking by myself - my wonderful cleaning friend, Myrna- helped me chop and slice the things I couldn't.  I couldn't live without her.)

Life can be so wonderful.  It can also be so hard.  I'm so glad that when our earth rocks (and it does.  It did.)- I can reflect on all the goodness and the love of family and friends.  And God is there in the wings with his open arms.  His is the Greatest friendship of all....

Frosted Drink Glasses with Sugared Cranberry Skeweres

Last night I hosted our annual GNO Christmas party (friend Funny Kathy assisted and of course friends jumped in since I'm still winged.)  You can tell I have way too much time on my hands but then it was.....

Way too much fun! I've been dreaming about this for a month!

I bought tall, skinny bud vases from Hobby Lobby.  The perfect size for a fun specialty drink.

I boiled 1 cup sugar with 1 cup water and reduced it until it was a syrup.  Let it cool but still warm..  First I dipped the tops of the vases in the syrup, then into sugar for that frosted look.

Then I dipped all the cranberries into the syrup and individually placed them on a cooling rack- just for about 1/2 hour, then rolled them in sugar and let them hardened.  These are sooo good!  I also did the same thing with fresh mint leaves.  I skewered the cranberries on a 5 inch long decorative skewer and ended with a mint leave.

I put a T. of pomegranates into the bottom of each glass, and at serving time, added chilled Cranberry Sprite (or 7-Up), then laid the cranberry spear across the top.  The drinks were so entertaining.  They bubbled like lava lamps all evening with the pomegranates going up and down.  We loved it!!!!
