Sunday Journal

I have a little journal I take to church on Sunday to write thoughts I hear and want to remember.
Here are a few current thoughts:

(from a youth speaker, Elliot Tidd)
* the gospel is always the second voice in my head.
*you cannot be a good example when you are making wrong choices.

"It may be safely assumed that no person has ever lived entirely free of suffering and sorrow, nor has there ever been a period in human history that did not have its full share of turmoil and misery.  When difficulties come to us- we ask the question "shall I falter or shall I finish?""  Pres. Monson
                              ***
In answering the question "when was a life ah-ha moment" Lou Bonner shared a time when he wasn't living the way he should and couldn't go to the temple when his son was married.  It was a turning point for him- he said, "It was the first time I couldn't buy my way out of (into) something."
                                ***
"You express gratitude to the Savior by how you live."

service opportunities:
~watched Peyton, Ryker and Gehrig and treated Brooke and Mallorie to pedicures
~watched Gehrig for Sam could take Mal out for her birthday
~treated the girls to witchie days
~volunteered to make a big batch of bbq chicken for L.M. for her son's farewell.  I never see Lisa anymore but I wanted to her know I still loved her.
~attended a childhood friend's sealing in the temple and did initiatory afterwards.  It was a "God Gift" day.  Because of this friend, Debbie (one of the Charm Girls)- my life is what it is.  I'll be eternally grateful!
~volunteered to make a game for David's Sunday School class.  I think he really appreciated it.

Testimony has "test" at the beginning.  It is not something that easily comes but something to work for/to seek for.  (Nate Morley's farewell)

Dick and Diane Emery are going to Perth, Australia.  In Dick's talk, he talked about the spiritual gift of "exceedingly great faith."- how it is different from plain faith and about the things we can do to increase our faith.  He shared a couple of stories about people with amazing faith.  He told of a friend, a convert to the church, whose mother was taken critically ill and in a coma. They spent much time at the hospital and at some point the Dr. said that she wouldn't make it through the night.  He called another friend to come and give her a blessing.  In the blessing, his friend felt impressed to say that the mother would be completely healed and be able to carry on her service to a single daughter raising children.  After spending time with his mom that evening at the hospital, the man started to go home and was stopped by the Dr.  Perhaps he didn't understand.  His mother would probably pass during the night.  But the man said, "I believe in the promise that she'll be better."  When he returned to the hospital the next morning, his mother was indeed better and lived a long life, able to help her daughter and grandchildren.  This man just didn't have faith.  He had exceedingly great faith.

Part of our Young Women's lesson talked about the virtue of Patience and in part, a talk by Pres. Uchtdorf :
(there is a wonderful video that goes along with this talk)

In the 1960s, a professor at Stanford University began a modest experiment testing the willpower of four-year-old children. He placed before them a large marshmallow and then told them they could eat it right away or, if they waited for 15 minutes, they could have two marshmallows.
He then left the children alone and watched what happened behind a two-way mirror. Some of the children ate the marshmallow immediately; some could wait only a few minutes before giving in to temptation. Only 30 percent were able to wait.
It was a mildly interesting experiment, and the professor moved on to other areas of research, for, in his own words, “there are only so many things you can do with kids trying not to eat marshmallows.” But as time went on, he kept track of the children and began to notice an interesting correlation: the children who could not wait struggled later in life and had more behavioral problems, while those who waited tended to be more positive and better motivated, have higher grades and incomes, and have healthier relationships.
What started as a simple experiment with children and marshmallows became a landmark study suggesting that the ability to wait—to be patient—was a key character trait that might predict later success in life. 1

                             ***

Brigham Young taught that when something came up which he could not comprehend fully, he would pray to the Lord, “Give me patience to wait until I can understand it for myself.” And then Brigham would continue to pray until he could comprehend it.

We must learn that in the Lord’s plan, our understanding comes “line upon line, precept upon precept.” In short, knowledge and understanding come at the price of patience.

Impatience, on the other hand, is a symptom of selfishness. It is a trait of the self-absorbed. It arises from the all-too-prevalent condition called “center of the universe” syndrome, which leads people to believe that the world revolves around them and that all others are just supporting cast in the grand theater of mortality in which only they have the starring role.

Witchie Days- 2014

Here are a few pictures from the 400 I took at Gardner Village.  This is one of my favorite family traditions that we do.  This year we missed Annee and mother Brooke, and also Bri (who was working.)  I loved how the costumes turned out but I'm already planning next year's costumes!

This is a favorite now and then.  Above is Addison at age 4.  Below is Addi at age 8.

I'm so thankful for my girlies and they indulge me in this activity.  It means so much to me!  Our day/evening ends with dinner at Archibalds (fried green tomatoes....even Mallorie learned to love) and then a stop by Afton's candy store.  Perfect!

M. and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, very Bad Day

What a crazy couple of days.

first of all (and most importantly) ~ a dear friendie had a mini-stroke.  Evidence of our mortality.  She's doing great but boy, this is a wake-up call.  Soooo thankful she's okay and pray that it continues to be so.

~started eating healthy, trying to lose some butters~lost 2 ~gained 3 1/2.........(*&(*&(*^*^*%$%%*!

~ we got a call from one of our IRA managers the other day saying they had received an email from my husband to transfer $83,000 to another account.  Luckily the manager called to verify.  Our accounts have been hacked!  Yesterday another money manager called saying he had received an email as well to forward funds to some address.  No win.  However, David just tried to file our taxes on an extension and it wouldn't accept it saying taxes had already been filed under his information a month ago.  I have a feeling this is the beginning of a huge nightmare!!!  We received calls from our Debit cards that Home Depot had been hacked when we were in California.  We don't know if this is a result or something else.

~they better not touch my lunch money.  I could be REALLY  difficult if that happened.

~I have a headache.  A big one.

~last night got to go (and take friends Hortencia and Roy) to see Meet the Mormons for a special viewing.  I thought the movie started at 7:00.  It started at 6:30.  Missed 1/3 of it.  Loved what I saw. Can't wait to see the whole thing.

~But we should have seen Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day instead.  It's THAT kind of day...

(on that happy note, check out the cooking blog to learn about massaging kale....)

Catching Up

I guess I might as well be on vacation since I'm not journaling.  Life has given us a beautiful fall- with all the rainstorms and lightening and changing mountain colors and the wet, earthy  smells.  Here are a few things going on:

General conference was wonderful the first weekend of October. My soul looks forward to this refreshing.

I have so many favorite thoughts and quotes.  Here's one from Lynn Robbins:

May His inspiring example strengthen us against the pitfalls of flattery from without or of conceit from within. May it give us courage to never cower or fawn at the feet of intimidation. May it inspire us to go about doing good as anonymously as possible and not “aspire to the honors of men”  And may His incomparable example help us always remember which is “the first and great commandment.   When others demand approval in defiance of God’s commandments, may we always remember whose disciples we are, and which way we face.

~ been to the temple a couple of times...once with David and I also took the Young Women one night.  Love these girls. (Love David!)

~got to spend a few hours with Parker at Primary Children's Hospital getting braces back on his teeth.  We thought he'd be having another surgery soon but not so.  Loved my Parker time....but also, just spending time at the children's hospital makes you so grateful for our challenges and not someone else's.  Gosh, we're blessed having this wonderful hospital here and my heart aches for the trials so many face.

~been to several final soccer games of the season.  Again, beautiful fall weather!

~scheduled another trip to my folks in a few weeks.  Mom was in the hospital twice while I was gone to California.  Finally, though, both sound better today.

~Bucket was at Sheron's home.  She is the ultimate hostess.  We heard about a great new start-up company that will be a liaison between FamilySearch and Ancestry.com- where family stories can be shared.  We had a lovely lunch with chicken and white bean chili (that speaks fall to me!) and a delicious kale salad.  We laughed when she told us that the kale needed to be "massaged" before using (I'll later share the recipe)- delicious.

~keep forgetting that I wanted to posted Brandi's new bathroom.  She wallpapered one wall in the main floor guest bathroom- it is white with little frames drawn on it.  She then filled a jar with stickie notes and markers and guests write a note or favorite thought on a stickie note and stick it on the wall.  She also posted some notes of affirmation.  I LOVE IT!!!!  Is this cute enough?

~okay, I feel like I am caught up a little.  Spent a wonderful birthday-day with Penny, several awesome art classes, visiting teaching lunch and visits, some cousin lunches, taught Young Women's twice since I've been home, made reservations to fly to Portland to see the folks, delivering witchie costumes for our grand witchie day coming up, moving furniture around and (I'm so sorry friends) dismantled my lovely guest room upstairs (and made a great one downstairs) to use the main floor room for my room.  Not that I'm moving out on David- but I'll have my own space- my office/computer room and painting and wrapping and whatever I want to do room.  Except sleep.  The bed is gone....  And there will be no standing on your head.  That is not allowed in my room.

Here's a great quote, again from Brandi's home-

Roasted Tomatoes in Balsamic Glaze

While on my recent Charm Girls beach trip, we ate at this fabulous pub called The Public House in Temecula California.  I was intrigued by The Now Infamous Goat Toast....but didn't realize the real treat was the sweet roasted somethings on top.  Was it sweet cherries?  Tart cherries?  No, it turns out it was roasted tomatoes.

After 3 wonderful weeks at the beach, yes, I had MANY favorite moments.  Loved my family moments.  Loved my friend moments.

But can I say these tomatoes were truly a moment.....

check out the recipe on the cooking blog:

California Charm Girls- 2014

My last week of vacation (whew!)- I was joined by the Charm Girls.  As I've mentioned in the past, these are girls I grew up with in Washington- they were my Primary class and Young Women's group...and we all went our different ways after high school.  We hadn't seen each other for 40 years....and then got together again.  And again.  And again!  Our "once" became "let's do this every two years" to "I can't wait that long" to "yearly."  We were naughty, naughty when we were growing up and also wonderful, wonderful.  We are witnesses to each of our youth.  I love these women.

This year was Fay's (from Temecula, California) turn to host.  Since I had the beach condo, we spent the first 3 days there.  By this time I was getting my fill of the beach.  It is like eating dessert for 3 weeks solid.  But I pulled up my bootstraps (ha!) and we did beach time and pool time.  As when we were young, we get laughing so hard and telling crazy stories that the people at the pool were shaking their heads.....

Pam flew in from Oregon and met Fay first.  They then drove to the condo and dropped everything off (we travel with STUFF)  and then we headed to San Diego to pick up Dawn and Debbie.  Our reunion is always wonderful, loud, crazy bordering  raucous.

We call ourselves the "Charm" girls because each year we get a new charm for our necklaces.  The person hosting usually gets the charm.  This is this years charm:

Here are all our charms!  They are reminders of such incredible times.

Hodads, a burger place in San Diego, was the first stop.  All the girls had been there before but the last time Fay hosted, we had just had a family tragedy and I couldn't go.  Remember them putting my face on a Popsicle stick and taking me everywhere so I could partake of the festivities?

Our first order of business is opening our gift bags.  I know this may sound like a lot of work and unnecessary but it is one of our favorite things.  Each year we make gift bags for each other and open them up like Christmas.  Lots of times the items are shared memories, our travels, favorite things and of course, treats.  Each year we make a book from the previous year and I did it this year so that was in my gift bags to them.  Also  poo-pourri.  If you haven't seen the commercial, Youtube it.  Hysterical.  and lots of other goodies.  I treasure all these gifties from my friends....and know they're thinking of me all year long.  Here is a darling necklace that Fay made for us this year....and for our craft, she taught us how.

In addition to beach time and great restaurant time, we shopped and got pedi's (again!) and played Farkel until we got hooked on Progressive Rummy.  We went to Temecula on Saturday and I loved seeing Fay's beautiful home.

So much good food and so many recipes I can't wait to share.  Once I catch my breath....

One of our adventures was going to The Magic Castle in Hollywood.  We stayed in a hotel close by.  There is a dress code for attendance and we were all a little stressed but thankfully, we were okay not being as "formal" as their web site suggested.  Below is what I laughingly refer to as "our Prom" pictures.

One of our funniest moments:  The same night that we were going to the Magic Castle, Drake and Lil' Wayne (both rappers) were performing in a sold out concert at the Hollywood Bowl, right by where we were staying.   We got on an elevator, all dressed up to go to the Magic Castle and some young men got on the elevator.  We said, (very animated) "Are you guys going to the concert!!!!"  Warily they said yes.  We exclaimed, "We are too!  We are so excited!"      The look on their faces.  Priceless!

We had craft time and San Diego time (went on the Seal tour which drives you around San Diego in this huge weird bus thing that then goes in the water.  It might have been fun but we couldn't hear the tour guide and did I mention we all have a short attention span.  We were expecting duck calls and water fights (like in Seattle).  Lunch at Seaport Village and another at Extrordinary Desserts.  We loved that Sunday  Fay invited her daughter and family for dinner. Another great day.

Okay, I can't keep writing because life is coming fast and I need to catch up.  Can I just say, 3 fabulous trips with friends and family.  It was memorable.  So fun. A little exhausting.  So fun.  Did I mention wonderful?
