One of my favorite things this season has been having a thank you goodie basket on our front porch (idea inspired by Heather Dahlquist Smith!)(she made the darling sign as well!) for all our delivery people! It will be a favorite tradition from now on! Also, a favorite Christmas gift was David installing our RING door bell ( the advertisement said “installed in minutes!” Biggest laugh of the season.) All day today the doorbell chimed that there was motion on our front por...ch (3 times deer yesterday💕). I couldn’t see anyone ( and wondered who the sneaky doorbell ditchers were- ). Busted! Magpies found the treat basket and made their way eating half a bag of fried pork rinds! As my mom always said, “No good deed goes unpunished!” (A little Godwink from my parents in heaven who I have missed so much- they know how I un-heavenly feel about magpies 😩. Love you Mom and Dad!😘)

Fun Holiday Dip
This is the dip that I took to our Girl's Night Out. It is Funny Kathy's and also friend Sophia's friend Nikki- but now it is mine!
I made the dip, but then (not shown)- I sprinkled pistachios and fresh pomegranates on the top. Everyone loved it at GNO. Will make it again for our Snicky Snack dinner. Love that you can buy the pistachios shelled and the pomegranates in a container!

Christmas Catch-Up
Just a few Christmas gatherings going on. This week was our Girl's Night Out Christmas party- hosted by Elaine with my assistance. (We always have two people do December.) Elaine's home and table were beyond beautiful but she doesn't like to cook. Luckily Roger grilled delicious salmon and Elaine made a great salad and I brought a white potato/sweet potato gratin that is marvelous, stuffed mushrooms, shrimp and rolls and a killer dip. Elaine also made gingerbread (I love gingerbread) with a warm nutmeg sauce and whipped cream. We ate and laughed and talked long past my bed time! How I love these women!
Look at these cute cookies Elaine's niece made! Works of art!
Tenillie sent me a few texts this past week. First she wanted to show me what cute project Sadie Jo was up to- making sugar scrubs for her friends! On her own! This girl (age 10) is amazing!
So, their
darling dog Jeter, was, a few weeks ago, as Sadie Jo Jo calls it- nuttered! Jeter has always been a happy dog but now he’s
a mad- at- Tenille dog! And he’s chewing
everything. Tenillie sent me a text that
said, “I’m sending this to you now because I know you are with friends. Look what Jeter did to my favorite Christmas
decoration! Santa needs a facelift- can
you help???” (I made the Santa years
ago, when I used to “do things”- I haven’t sculpted now for years but I’ll give
it a try. Poor Santa. Poor Jeter~)

And Siblings Dinner at Fugi Japanese Restaurant. Thankfully the siblings invited us! We love our family so much!!!! We played a game where we exchanged our favorite things. (I took gift cards to Swig, David took boxes of hand warmers, etc.)

The Man and the Birds
Today, in our Sideways branch, Michelle Nielson, shared music and word. She asked me what my favorite Christmas story was and this is the one I chose.
Paul Harvey, a radio commentator, shared this each year at Christmas.

Paul Harvey, a radio commentator, shared this each year at Christmas.
The Man and the Birds by Paul Harvey
The man to whom I’m going to introduce you was not a scrooge, he was a kind decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family, upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn’t believe all that incarnation stuff which the churches proclaim at Christmas Time. It just didn’t make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just couldn’t swallow the Jesus Story, about God coming to Earth as a man.
“I’m truly sorry to distress you,” he told his wife, “but I’m not going with you to church this Christmas Eve.” He said he’d feel like a hypocrite. That he’d much rather just stay at home, but that he would wait up for them. And so he stayed and they went to the midnight service.
Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier and then went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper. Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound…Then another, and then another. Sort of a thump or a thud…At first he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against his living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They’d been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter, had tried to fly through his large landscape window.
Well, he couldn’t let the poor creatures lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter, if he could direct the birds to it.
Quickly he put on a coat, galoshes, tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light, but the birds did not come in. He figured food would entice them in. So he hurried back to the house, fetched bread crumbs, sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail to the yellow-lighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs, and continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them…He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around them waving his arms…Instead, they scattered in every direction, except into the warm, lighted barn.
And then, he realized that they were afraid of him. To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me…That I am not trying to hurt them, but to help them. But how? Because any move he made tended to frighten them, confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed because they feared him.
“If only I could be a bird,” he thought to himself, “and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to safe, warm…to the safe warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see, and hear and understand.”
At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. And he stood there listening to the bells – Adeste Fidelis – listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas.
And he sank to his knees in the snow.

The Light in Our World
I've shared about my Sadie Jo Jo being such a crack up. Full of humor and self-confidence. Last year I shared about how her dad was driving her to school and Sadie came out in her full unicorn dress- the jammies, the backpack, the shoes. The works. She told her dad it was dress-up day. When they got to school, Travis saw none of the other kids were dressed up. He said, "I don't think it's dress-up day, Sadi." to which she replied, jumping out of the car, "Well, it is for me!"
Ha Ha!
No one else was going to school in Christmas costume today, the last day of school before Christmas break.
Well, except for this one!!!!
She just cracks me up!!!!

All I Want For christmas Is My Bottom Teeth.....
One of the highlights of my year, this year, has been studying the NewTestament. Besides the scriptures, I have loved ComeFollowMeDaily on Instagram and each day I listen to Don't Miss This with Emily Belle Freeman and David Butler. In addition, on Thursday mornings, I meet with a small group of women from our original Ward (remember I'm not in the Ward but in our sideways branch)- as we do an indepth study of the 4 Gospels. Friend Paul Alverez spent years compiling 4 books using the New Testament, and selections from 5 biblical scholars (2 LDS- Talmadge and McConkie, 3 not- Farrar, Eidersheim, and Geike). It has been beyond amazing. We are almost through book 2 and will finish the other two books next year.
Today, being the season, Paula invited us to her home for a little breakfast brunch after class. It was so delicious and I'm anxious to post recipes. I think I have mentioned that almost 3 months ago I got Invisalignn braces. That's one of the beauties of getting old- your teeth start moving around! But I cannot eat with the retainers in so I have to peel them off until finished eating and cleaning my teeth. I took them out (at the table- how uncouth of me! I embarrass myself) and stuck them in the side compartment of my purse.
Later in the day, I went to put my retainers back in. I searched and searched my purse. They were not there. I thought I was losing my mind. Then I wondered if they had fallen out by where I was sitting at Paula's house. Then I wondered about Paula's dog. I gave her a call.
She said, "Oh, my dog couldn't have gotten them- she was with me the whole time." Well, I mentioned the dog had been under the table part of the time. lol.
She said she would look.
She found my uppers. My bottoms were chewed to a frazzle!!!! She felt so terrible. That sneaky dog got into my purse (sitting on the floor)- and must have thought my retainers smelled like doggie biscuits!
I've had a good laugh over that. When I told David about it, you can imagine his reply....
Doggone.

Stay-Vaca Again!
I just seem to go from one Stay-Cation to another. Cowboy hubby went to Las Vegas for the week- to watch the Las Vegas Finals Rodeo championship (the Olympics of rodeo) and also he qualified for a big roping there (his header missed the steer which means David doesn't even get to throw a rope- then in the consolation, his header caught and David only caught one hoof. Bummer!) David has had a great time with friend, Lynn Barnson but I'm ready for him to come home.
But- I've had a really wonderful week staying at home. I've been so busy buying and re-buying fleece blankets for all our sideways kids for our Christmas party. 60 blankets. And the number changes daily with new kids admitting all the time (3 this week.) I had Heather Smith make all the tags and they are so cute. It breaks my heart these kids are being admitted just before Christmas. We've been working with these kids for over a year- and I still never get used to these "kids" (as young as 10!)- being sent away from their families. I realize they are troubled and have issues but as a mom and a grandma, I never get over the ache for them.
Yesterday we had our Ministering luncheon- I love these ladies so much. Gayle H. and I have visited Elsa for over 25 years! They are all just such lovely, classic, God-loving ladies. I'm privileged to call them friends. We give little gifties to each other- I do my traditional paper plates- (and speaking of wrapping, I also did 25 of these for neighbor gifts! I should buy stock in cellophane!)
Wed. and Thursday, friend Sophia came from Logan. We love to get together and play, and eat and cook together. Food really binds us together. lol.
Well, one night we were sitting at my kitchen table playing cards (I taught Sophia a new card game my granddaughter Sadie Jo taught me called Garbage. It's so fun and Sophia loved it!) We were playing and Sophia looked over to my side table, which I might add IS decorated for Christmas, and saw where I have a domed cloche on the table. She squinted and asked, "What's in there- 7 layer bars?" I about fell off my chair. No, Sophia, that would be baby Jesus!!!!!
(in Sophia's defense, we had made an appetizer that required jalapeno pepper in it. Sophia had diced the pepper and unfortunately got some pepper juice under her nails, then eventually in her eyes- and she was "contactless." But still! Poor baby Jesus!
This morning, I had a whole list of things to do. I called Brendalyn to see if she wanted to do errands and she said that she and Loretta were making candy and to come make some. Making candy wasn't on my list but you know I'll do anything for a good time. I thought we were just making peanut brittle but when I got there, they had about a dozen things going on! But first, Brendalyn made us breakfast!!!! So darling! I love my friends. (p.s. the peanut brittle turned out horrible. Apparently the recipe they got from a candy making class was wrong- instead of a little salt and a little baking soda, this one called for a ton. Oh well! Disasters make for a fun story later!!!!)

Tonight I had plans to drop in to a birthday party with Laurie Barnson- for an in the past friend. I really wanted to go but I've had a little stomach bug that Sophia and I passed back and forth, I think- so had to bail out. So I've been home puttering, trying to catch up here and there.
The phone rang and I missed the call. I saw the number and thought it was Brendalyn. I pushed redial. It wasn't. It was a girl, a woman now, that I was her Young Women's leader about 30 years ago. She asked if I remembered her. I said, "Of course," She said that she had just received Young Men and Young Women carolers on her front porch singing to her. It brought back all sorts of memories about when we were together. She told me that she has never forgotten me and the love I had for her, even though she wasn't a member- and wanted me to know that finally, after all these years she has joined the church and that she always shares the relationship we had in Young Women's all those years. I just stood here, bawling my head off. Was that the sweetest thing in the whole world? What is interesting about that time in my life was that I was going through a stinking depression and we had just moved to this Ward and in two weeks I was called as Young Women's president. I didn't want to do it at the time- I didn't know a soul, but I know it was a gift because when you are going through depression, really what you want to do is just curl up in a ball and sleep. But because of that calling, I had to extend myself "beyond me"- and Heavenly Father knew that I needed that. And oh, I did love those girls. And this one. Who knew she loved me too?
The sweetest gift I could receive this year.....

Christ Tree
I'm trying so hard to keep a Christ-Centered Christmas. So far, so good. I'm just so thankful to be feeling better, have had this fabulous year of re-reading The New Testament so Christ's life and example are so forefront in my mind and I've had lots of opportunities for service.
One thing I've done this year is to have a Christ Tree. I got this idea from Brandi who has had one for years. Mine is smaller but I love it so much!
It is a small flocked tree with framed photos of Christ's life by artist Liz Lemon Swindle.
On the back of each ornament is a beautiful thought of Christmas. They are so beautiful!
I also have these metal stars with one of the name's of Christ on them- I love them too!
I have my nativities around it and I just adore it.

Service
One of the things I love most about November and December (and life!) is to wake up each day and pray about who you can help that day. Already I have had some wonderful experiences (that hopefully I will get around to journaling)- some big, some small.
Yesterday I had to make the race to Costco. It is sooooo busy this time of year- okay, almost every day. But I ran in and out and was wrangling my grocery cart next to my car and the gal next to me was wrangling her cart. And then I notice that one of her purchases had fallen under her cart so I, trying to be of service, went around and under her cart to retrieve the fallen item. I handed it to the lady and she looked at me, kind of startled. I mentioned I had noticed it had fallen under her cart and she laughed. "I put it there to keep my cart from rolling back."
Oh.
Oh well, my heart was trying!

Addi and I went to Orem the other night because Heidi and Elijah were in the Hale Theater's children's production of the Christmas Carol. They did a great job- such the little Thespians! And I love being with Addi. The traffic was HORRENDOUS ON THE FREEWAY. I won't talk any more about that but I do love the whole message of The Christmas Carol- and Tiny Tim-
“And it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!”

Christmas Tea Party Bucket Style
Today was a perfect kickoff to December. Gail M. hosted Bucket at her beautiful penthouse overlooking Temple Square. It is always such a treat to be there. This is the view out her North window. Can you imagine looking at that every day when you woke up?
Also, one of Gail's beautiful trees!
Gail planned a perfect Tea Party for us all. She had an Herbal Tea bar with all the fixings. She also had a vintage tea cup for each of us- that was later wrapped and sent home with us.
I'm a hot cocoa girl and the chocolate bar was delish (I had salted caramel hot chocolate)- and look at these darling marshmallows!
The Tea Party luncheon was divine- all sorts of colored sandwiches and fillings- a fruit salad and a divine green salad. We filled our plates up thinking we couldn't possibly eat everything on them- and voila! We did. A marvelous trifle was for dessert. Gail's trick is she whips the cream, then gently folds in a part at a time, lemon curd. That then is layered with the angel food cake (she baked!) and the fresh fruit. Perfect ending to the meal.
We always share little gifts at the end of Christmas Bucket. Besides our Tea Cup, Gail also had a special treat, just off the presses. Jason Wright, the New York Times Best Selling author, co-wrote Gail's book, "Courage To Be You". (He wrote "The Christmas Jars" which is also a movie.) Now Jason has come out with a Christmas book, The Christmas Doll, which is actually a story Gail shared with him about when she was a little girl. The book is wonderful and would be a wonderful addition to anyone's Christmas library! And I love that it is about Gail- whom I adore!
This year I found Spiced Apple Cinnamon Vanilla Syrup at a fun boutique that Brandi and I and Pretty Patty Petty went to last week. I had cousin Zella's daughter, Heather, make up the cute tags for me for my gift.
Chef Valene makes her famous Chocolate Turtles (that I have to hide from David.) BFF Cathy made homemade hot fudge. Funny Kathy gives us a jar of honey from THEIR OWN BEEHIVES! All the gifts were unique and given with love.
When I go to something so wonderful, it makes me want to turn around and do something to make someone else feel so loved as I felt today. Good thing I get to co-host with friend Elaine in a few weeks for Girl's Night Out! Hope to play it forward!
