Nice Things

Before I could even get my day going on Monday, cute Ruthie from the Ward showed up with a yummy pie, just because! You can't even plan to do service without it just popping in on you first. It was like a pumpkin chiffon or something with a little bit of caramelized sugar on top. It was delish and David was a happy camper! And I felt loved and blessed....

Monday my car was still dead. Son Ben showed up and spent the whole afternoon working on my car. We thought it was going to be a simple (to him, not me) battery replacement. It wasn't. I was impressed that he even knows what to do. He's the best fixer of things and is self-taught really-smart. We got to have lunch together so that was a treat. A funny that happened was when we went to the car parts place. The worker was outside hanging out with a buddy so he had to go in to help us. While he was asking us questions, he was eating out of a box of Wheat Thins. Crunch. Crunch! Crunch!!! Without a care in the world. Then when he went in the back, he had a coughing attack. A hacking attack. A clearing his throat in a manly way attack. It was like it was on speaker. It was LOUD! I kept looking around thinking maybe we were being punk'd. I'm telling you, when he rang up the battery, I didn't want to touch anything he had.......
I really appreciate Ben's wonderful service to me.

When I was showing Halloween costumes the other day, I totally forgot to include this cute couple! Brandi and Ryan have big shoes to fill since Ryan's folks were the "ultimate" Mr and Mrs.

Last night was our GNO. We were small in numbers but we had a great evening together. Funny friend Kathy hosted. Look how pretty her table was set:

Kathy has a hutch in her kitchen that I covet. I don't covet much but I do covet this.

I keep telling her it looks horrid in her kitchen and I should take it off her hands...... as a service....

Last night in bed, I was sharing with David my plans to do a special service each day this month to enhance Thanksgiving. I was able to share simple services- someone that needed to be taken to an appointment. Someone who needed a book returned. Someone who needed a ride to the airport, a package mailed. Just little things that matter to the people being serviced. And to me who is praying for opportunities...

A friend sent an email (maybe you've seen it) with this sentiment that I thought was beautiful. Although I never think we should be content with ourselves as we are (we can always be improving)- I also believe we should quit beating ourselves up over shortcomings and celebrate who we are- daughters of God. That wonderful comes in all shapes and sizes and manner of doing.

"May there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us."

I hope service is a part of your day. Comment here or email me if you want to be anonymous in a service that you've rendered that matters to you. Or just say "I've served." I'll do a drawing in the morning. So far there are only 3 participants. The contest is only to encourage you. But you can win a treat!

And the Winner is.....

The winner is hidden inside the comments.

Comments to DS at the well- lofarithn. AMAZING we have lived without understanding it all these years! I think it was invented to make something simpler but you had to PAY ATTENTION to figure it out. So not there!

Julie- or "Sticker Bullock" as little Tanner used to call her....you have my absolute admiration. Anyone who runs a marathon is a super hero in my book. Of course, it probably meant your mother dropped you on your head as a baby. (kidding)

signed, yours truly, The Slug

Sophia- you can take two hours to tell a five minute story? It makes for a loooong lunch. Let's meet at Firehouse. You know the exit...

Lana- I'm double-checking your post. Your creator is nuts! But a FABULOUS blonde joke!

HOLLY, YOU CUTE AZ. GIRL!- YOU ARE OUR DRAWING WINNER!!!! Send me your address info to my email- mdwillpoet@msn.com And tell me what gift certificate you would like. Just think, you can buy $25 worth of avocados if you wish!

Sherrie- I LOVE hearing from new lurkers. I get tired of talking to myself! And "oh my gosh!"- you yodel AND play bass in a bluegrass band????? I want to yodel AND play bass. Well, really in the next life I'm going to play a cello. Do you love Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band? (google them.) And you talk a mile a minute AND you eat potatoes, potatoes, potatoes? Soul mates. That's what it is called!!!! (And it is cool to be closer to 100 than one...except your body starts falling apart in shocking ways....)

Cindy- well, you were actually too late to be in the drawing but I would have added your name except I had already thrown the drawing papers in the garbage and then cleaned out the leftovers from the refrigerator. I know...more details that anyone cared to know but I'm friends with Sophia and new best buddies with Sherrie. We are talkalots. But just so you know, it is un-American/British to not be a Beatle's fan. And just because I talk about a colonoscopy on this site, YOU talk about "dilation?" (laughing!) (My best try at topping this was I was dilated to 3 for two weeks, 4 for a week, 5 for a week and had a 25 min. baby. Ta-Da! Anyone? Anyone? (meaning can anyone top us?) And sushi and pumpkin cookies mentioned in the same sentence about did me in! I LOVE pumpkin cookies but sushi smells too much like my childhood fish tank. But my Guatemala kiddos LOVE it. Does that mean I'm uncool? Un-21st century? I WANT to like sushi....in fact, I LOVE saying sushi. Sushi. Sushi. Sushi. Isn't it fun. But eating it?

CONGRATULATIONS HOLLY!!! HAVE A NICE DAY!

Contest

From recent memes, tell me:

1. Your favorite Beatle's song (you could tell me why if you want...)

2. Tell me something you can do (or have done) that most people can't.

3. Did one of your schoolteachers ever say you were "retarded" in reading? That you had "retardation" in ANYTHING? Please tell me one thing you are "retarded" in. When I told Brandi the "retardation" thing, she said, "Well, your teacher was actually using the term correctly. We don't use it correctly today." That just goes to show that "retarded" people can produce very intelligent kids....

4. What food could you eat three times a day and never get sick of it?

5. What do you love best about fall?

Contest will end Friday morning at noon. I'll post when I get home. If you also post a blonde joke, I'll enter your name twice.

Movie Message Contest

Monday I watched Annee for the day. I have her Mondays until school starts. We played a zillion games of Aggravation, ran errands, swam and watched the movie Happy Feet. I had never seen it before but it had me laughing in several scenes.

Leopard Seal: Come here, sausage. I take you with ketchup!

Ramón: Yeah, but first you gotta catch up!

(April, I know you'll love that line!)

The writing in animated movies is really so cleaver....it frustrates me that I can't always hear or understand all the funny stuff or innuendo. (Not because I'm closer to 100 than 1 but because so much is going on at once.) I need to read a script so I can not miss a thing. So many of the films have great underlying messages. Lots of things little kids couldn't possibly understand make adults laugh.

After watching it, I tried to think of my very favorite animated movie. I don't think I could pick one but Toy Story and Toy Story 2 for entertainment, are hard to beat.

[Mr. Potato Head watches hopefully as Andy open birthday presents]

Mr. Potato Head: Mrs. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head, Mrs. Potato Head... hey, I can dream, can't I?

I love all the fairy tales ( Enchanted being one of my all time favorites)....

and I love and I love and I love them all. Except for Bolt! (I love Bolt. I just don't like not being a super dog anymore....)

So, since I am up at Midway today, having a ball, eating at the Boar's Inn and some other wonderful place, laughing with girlie friends, taking a gazillion pictures, etc. - how about a little contest?

Share with me:

1. Your all time favorite animated film

2. Your favorite princess

And if you can, share with me a favorite line from one of your favorite animated movies. (We'll do other kinds of movies another time.) (you can just google "Shrek quotes" etc. if you can't remember.) Something to make me laugh or think or just remember. Anyone can enter. I'll draw the winner on Friday morning at 9:00 MST. If you don't have a blog account and don't know how to comment, just email me at mdwillpoet@msn.com and I can post it.

Salad Contest

Post a favorite summer salad! I will draw the name of the winner on Sunday. In the meantime, we'll all get some new recipes to try!

One of mine is a recipe of Brandi's.

Ranch Broccoli and Spinach Salad

1/4 c. sugar
1 cup mayonnaise
1 T. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. powdered Ranch dressing mix
1 1/2 lbs. broccoli florets (I like them cut small)
2 bunches baby spinach (I usually one use one)
1 cup raisins
1 cup sunflower seeds
2 small green onions, diced
8 strips of bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained and diced

Mix sugar, mayo, vinegar and dry Ranch dressing. Refrigerate. Mix broccoli, spinach, raisins, sunflower seeds, diced green onions, bacon and water chestnuts. Mix with dressing when ready to serve.
